Four Fantastic Upcoming Highlights for 2022!Act. Make. Move. Collaborate.
As 2021 draws to a close, we are starting to get excited about some of the fantastic things Fourth Monkey have planned for 2022!
Check out our selection of upcoming highlights from the Fourth Monkey community in London and in Bristol below, from free, full-day auditions in selected regional locations to the first public performance season from our first-ever BA (Hons) Acting graduating company plus much, much more…
Be Bold and Play – Our Audition Panel are Coming to You!
As a drama school and arts organisation, Fourth Monkey are committed to making actor training accessible and inclusive – we abolished all audition fees in September 2019, delivered full-day auditions via virtual delivery in January 2021 in response to the ongoing lockdown, and opened a dedicated Centre of Excellence in Bristol in September 2021 to allow aspiring young performers who may prefer or need to stay closer to home whilst they start their training to engage with Fourth Monkey’s drama school provision.
As the next step in this ongoing commitment to being open and accessible, we are taking our audition panel on the road for 2022! We will be offering regional audition days, hosted by likeminded partner venues in selected locations across the UK – ideal for anyone who would like to attend an in-person audition day but may not be able to travel to our London or Bristol bases in order to do so.
In line with our commitment to zero audition fees for all applicants, our regional audition days are completely free of charge to attend. Designed to give prospective students a chance to see and experience everything they need to decide if Fourth Monkey will be right for them, everyone who joins us for a regional audition day will have the chance to act, make, move, and collaborate through a series of interactive ensemble workshops exploring our core training disciplines, as well as share their chosen speeches with our panel during an individual audition. In short, our regional auditions will mirror the audition experience offered at our training bases, The Monkey House and The Bamboo House, but with the added advantage of meeting our panel a little closer to home!
Our first regional audition day for 2022 will be hosted by our friends Nonsuch Studios in Nottingham on Saturday 19 February and is open to applicants across all training courses, CertHE Acting & Theatre Making, BA (Hons) Acting and MA Collaborative Theatre. Want to join our panel in Nottingham? Just select this regional date when submitting your application form and booking your audition day via our website!
Keep an eye on our website and our socials for more regional audition days being announced in the new year!
Introducing… Our BA (Hons) Acting – Class of 2022 Graduating Company!
We delighted to introduce Fourth Monkey’s Class of 2022 – our first BA (Hons) Acting graduating company as an accredited drama school and a fantastically bold, fearless cohort of performers and theatre makers!
We are incredibly proud of how hard our graduating company have worked since they joined us in September 2020, and we are thrilled to be able give them an opportunity to showcase and celebrate their talent and creativity as they head into the final few months of their undergraduate actor training with Fourth Monkey.
Our BA (Hons) Acting graduates will present their first public-facing shows in the new year, sharing their Contemporary Season performances in March 2022 ahead of a Graduate Showcase at a central London venue later in the spring. Chosen to reflect Fourth Monkey’s core values of sharing untold stories from often unheard voices and celebrating the most innovative and original in contemporary theatre making and writing, our Class of 2022 will perform four productions in repertory, each comprising a cast of graduating students – Everyman adapted by Carol-Ann Duffy, Days of Significance (Roy Williams), Heavy Weather (Lizzy Nunnery) and This Changes Everything (Joel Horwood). Running from14 March and 2 April, tickets for all Contemporary Season performances are
on sale now and we would be delighted to see you there, supporting and celebrating our Class of 2022!
Innovative New Theatre from Emerging Artists – Celebrating our Monkey Alumni!
In what has been an unusual, and at times challenging, eighteen months for the creative arts, we have been thrilled to see so many of Fourth Monkey alumni take their first steps into the industry.
From the Offie-nominated one-woman show Empty in Angel, which tore the lid off life as a bicycle courier in the gig economy, to the London Pub Theatre ‘Standing Ovation’ Award-winning Mary and Mietek, which explored love between two people from vastly different cultures during the Second World War, and the return of Sadie Clark’s one-woman piece Algorithms (AKA “this year’s Fleabag”) to Soho Theatre in December 2021, our graduates have been hard at work creating and sharing bold and innovative new theatre.
As we look ahead to the new year, we are delighted to be supporting a selection of Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 graduates as they prepare to showcase their work as part of 2022’s VAULT Festival – Generation V drama school takeover. A celebration of the best and brightest in new theatre from fledging theatre companies and emerging artists, VAULT Festival’s Generation V features four fantastic Monkey alumni theatre companies, alongside graduates from East 15, as part of the wider festival programme, we are very excited about what our graduates have in store for anyone heading down to VAULT Festival next year!
From an exploration of corporate burnout that asks “what the F**CK happens when your work environment turns toxic” to a surrealist clash between idealism and reality set in a hotel lobby, and from a touching story of belonging and the notion of “home” set against a backdrop of the ongoing climate crisis to an innovative piece blending physical theatre and clown to allow historical female characters to reclaim their narratives, there is plenty to look forward from the next generation of Monkey makers, movers and shakers – check out our round-up of the new companies appearing at VAULT Festival in 2022 and get ready to meet Generation V.
Find your Ensemble – MA Collaborative Theatre in Bristol for 2022
A unique, industry-bridging training course which gives artists and creatives from a diverse variety of backgrounds an opportunity to create and strategically develop their own fledging theatre companies, exploring and evolving professional theatre making skills in the process, our MA Collaborative Theatre brings together likeminded creatives and encourages them to push the boundaries of contemporary collaborative theatre making. Our current cohort of MA students have spent the first term of their training discovering collaborative theatre making techniques and practices from around the world, including the work of Polish theatre company Song of the Goat, exploring Japanese Noh Theatre and working with Peter Brook Ensemble collaborator Sean O’Callaghan, and we can’t wait to see their final project and public performances next term!
For 2022, we will be expanding our postgraduate training provision to allow an even broader range of talented artists, makers and creatives to find their ensemble – we are delighted to announce that, subject to approval and validation, MA Collaborative Theatre will also be delivered at The Bamboo House, our Bristol home and training base, from Autumn 2022. Whilst we “dot the Is” and “cross the Ts” to ensure this happens without a hitch, anyone interested in joining us for postgraduate-level drama school training in 2022 can learn more about the MA course, plus get everything they need to submit an application to audition, via our website.
