'There's a different way of doing things'Fourth Monkey on InTheRoom's podcast
We were thrilled when Fourth Monkey’s Artistic Director and co-founder, Steve Green, was invited to take part in the InTheRoom podcast, a theatre and performing arts podcast which seeks to try and answer the question: “how do I get in the room?” – an idea that is very much aligned with the Monkey ethos and approach to drama school training.
In this engaging conversation with presenters Matt and Christian, Steve discussed his background, influences and inspiration as a creative, as well as what inspired him and Fourth Monkey’s Director of Training and co-founder, Charleen Qwaye, to establish a drama school training provision that aims to celebrate the individual and what makes an artist unique, rather than moulding and shaping a certain “type” of performer.
Steve also delved into the Fourth Monkey audition process and how this has been designed to allow aspiring actors and theatre makers to truly “see and be seen” whilst they are exploring and experiencing our approach to actor training throughout the course of an audition day, ensuring that this echoes the belief that the invidual and their unique voice should be celebrated and empowered:
“We don’t charge an audition fee to enable people to get into the space and when, they come into the space, they are with us for the full day. It’s about coming into the space…and trusting that you are enough.”
The conversation between Steve and InTheRoom also explores Fourth Monkey’s core pillars of training, Act. Make. Move. Collaborate, and how our drama school training aims to create actors and artists who are confident and capable in creating sustainable careers through making their own work, collaborating with their peers and seeking out creative opportunities as employable, industry-ready performers.
We were delighted to be invited to take part in this honest, invigorating conversation with the InTheRoom team and to be able to share an insight into what makes Fourth Monkey’s approach to contemporary professional actor training unique. The full episode is available via InTheRoom’s Spotify or Apple podcast channels – we hope you enjoy listening!
